ASHGABAT – A GLORIOUS PAST AND PRESENT

Ashgabat, the capital of our beloved Homeland is on the threshold of celebrating its 140th anniversary experiencing a full and creative new life of present time under the slogan «Turkmenistan – Homeland of Peace and Trust» year. After 140 years of hard and difficult history, Ashgabat has transformed from a small Turkmen village into a large metropolis. If you look at the history of the capital, Ashgabat city originated on the site of the ancient settlement of Ashgabat.  In early 1881, There were about 800 traditional yurts located along with the Ashgabat spring in the said village.

Ashgabat is established as a central city of Turkmens because of its convenient geographical location. Ashgabat soon became a large merchant city and grew very rapidly. It also contributed to the development of the city by helping to turn it into a trade hub with Iran. There had about 800 traditional yurts located along with the Ashgabat spring in the said village.

The first private pharmacy in Ashgabat was opened in 1885 and the same year a railway arrived in Ashgabat, and a large beautiful railway station is being built.

In the late nineteenth century, mainly the trade and service system of Ashgabat city has evolved. In 1889 the city had 750 houses, 654 outlets, 121 specialist shops, 33 caravanserais, 2 hotels, 15 canteens, and a small military hospital.

The population of the city has grown very rapidly.

In 1893, the first hospital for serving 15 people was opened in our central city. They rented one of the private houses for it.

It was only in 1901 that the hospital moved into a specially built building.

The streets of Ashgabat were initially narrow and winding. Then very straight and wide roads began to be built. In general, the city was very civilized, only the flat roof of the houses meant that it was an Asian city.

On January 1, 1894, 246 lamps were installed to illuminate the streets of Ashgabat. There were a total of 2002 buildings in the capital in 1899, and this number has been steadily increasing. Some new streets are starting to appear in the city. In 1915, most of the homes in the city included single-story private houses.

For the first time in the 30s, the streets began to be paved with asphalt. After that, cars and buses began to be used instead of cavalry. At that time, there were schools, gymnasiums for boys and girls, a railway technical school, and hospitals. At that time, many cultural and social buildings were built and commissioned in the city. Among them are the «Modern» theater, the Turkmen State Drama Theater, and the «Çeperçilik» theater for 1,000 spectators.

The city of Ashgabat experienced the hardships of the war as it had throughout the country during the years of the Great Patriotic War.

From the first days of the war until the victory all the inhabitants of Ashgabat did their best to provide comprehensive assistance to the frontline in the enterprises and institutions of the city.

At that time a defense fund was established in the country, as of August 27, 1941, as a result of the noble work of the people of Ashgabat, it was reported that it had received a total of 3 million 858 thousand manats. The women of Ashgabat also contributed their gold and silver jewelry and prepared warm clothing for the soldiers as a help to the frontline.

Ashgabat suffered a terrible earthquake on October 6, 1948. The flourishing city is in ruins in ten seconds, and thousands are left under it.

Despite the hardships of the war, all countries have extended a friendly hand to Ashgabat.

Man-made water of the Karakum River came on May 12, 1962. This has turned our capital into an orchard and created ample opportunities to improve the ecological situation. At that time, about 4,000 garden seedlings were planted annually in Ashgabat.

The new large-screen «Vatan» Cinema and the Turkmen State Drama Theater named after the classic poet Mollanepes «king of love» has opened in Ashgabat in 1963. Along with urban planning, industrial facilities are being built and put into operation. In the early twentieth century, a silk mill-textile factory and Ashgabat bread factory has begun to operate in Ashgabat. Over the years, Ashgabat has started to grow rapidly.

During the years of independence, Ashgabat has flourished. Our capital is amazing today, it has a new look under the leadership of our esteemed President. Ashgabat is the political, economic, scientific, educational, and cultural center of our country, it has become a major political and economic center of the region after gaining its independence.

The coral city of Asia - Ashgabat has several buildings and parks that add to the beauty of the city, it includes modern European architectural harmony with the ancient architectural standards of Asia.

On the eve of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of our glorious Independence, the 140th anniversary of white marble Ashgabat, several important facilities were inaugurated in the capital.

Among them are the Turkmenbashi State Commercial Bank of Turkmenistan, the Senagat Joint-Stock Commercial Bank of Turkmenistan, the complex of buildings of the Divan of the Halk Maslahaty, and the Consultative Center and the Reception Center of Turkmenistan was recently opened and commissioned in the southern part of the capital.

Thus, the new modern buildings were built with the unprecedented efforts of the Turkmen leader, along with the magnificent and unique structures of the business part of the capital which created a unique harmony with the natural beauty of the foothills of the Kopetdag.

Archabil and Chandybil highways in the capital have become a symbol of the great reforms of the prosperous period of our Sovereign state. In just a few years, dozens of white marble buildings appeared in that direction. Also, there is a flourishing park that gives a special beauty in this area that connects Constitution building with the «Älem» cultural and leisure center.

In the prosperous period of our Sovereign State, Ashgabat has become one of the most peaceful, prosperous, and beautiful cities in the world under the wise leadership of our esteemed President. As a result of the wise initiatives of our Hero Arkadag, many of the various facilities built and put into operation in Ashgabat, and included in the Guinness Book of World Records with their unique architectural features. Our white marble capital is strengthening its position at the international level with its unique beauty of the present time.

May our esteemed President live a long life in a good health who is working hard to make our beautiful capital Ashgabat one of the most developed cities in the world!
