CIS observers began observing the election campaign

The representatives of the Commonwealth of Independent States as long-term international observers and its office have started their work in Turkmenistan. The delegation came to our capital at the invitation of the Turkmen side in connection with the elections of deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan to be held on March 26.

During the meeting with the Chairman of the central commission for holding Elections and referendums in Turkmenistan, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States Ilkhom Tuychievich Nematov, issues related to the upcoming parliamentary elections were discussed. The guest was informed in detail about the course of the election campaign, which is being conducted efficiently and in accordance with national legislation, and the necessary conditions will be created for observing the elections.

In turn, Ilkhom Tuychievich reported on the principles of work and organization of the work of a group of observers from the CIS. It was emphasized that the work of the mission will be organized in accordance with the legislation of Turkmenistan and will be based on the generally recognized principles and norms of international law in the field of organizing and holding elections. In doing so, the mission is guided by an internal election hearing, and the task of the mission is to assess the compliance of the election campaign with national legislation and to promote the holding of free and democratic elections.

The mission is planned to include about 50 observers, including 10 of them, who will work on a long-term basis. This is stated in the message distributed by the mission office.
